Making Multigenerational Family Businesses Work Subject of August EDC Breakfast
Sarasota, FL (Aug. 4, 2009) --The Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County (EDC) will hold an investor update breakfast, “Passing the Torch: Making Multigenerational Family Businesses Work," at 7:45 a.m., August 12 at Libby’s Café and Bar, 1917 South Osprey Ave., Sarasota, Fla.

The event will feature a panel discussion with Jim Cavanaugh, president, The Cavanaugh Company; Sam Prost, president, Weber Manufacturing; James Tollerton, president, Professional Benefits and his daughter Taylor Tollerton, vice-president.

About the panelists:

Jim Cavanaugh, The Cavanaugh Company Jim represents the third generation to work in The Cavanaugh Company. Beginning as a manufacturing assistant, he worked his way up the ranks to president – a position he took over from his father, John, in 2008. The company, widely known as a premier musical string manufacturer, has three facets: Super-Sensitive Musical String Co., Black Diamond Strings, LLC. And Bari Woodwind Supplies, LLC.

Jim Tollerton and Taylor Tollerton, Professional Benefits, Inc. This father-daughter team not only advises its clients on business succession, but is living the experience themselves. Weber Manufacturing Weber Manufacturing has been making screw machine products in Venice since 1963.Sam joined the family business in 1970 and purchased it from his parents, aunt and uncle in 1992. Sam's son has joined the business in the last year. The panelists will discuss the benefits, challenges and details of running multigenerational family businesses. They will also share tips for business succession planning.
